When Did the Person I Used to Be Disappear?

Confronting the silent vanishing of an older version of oneself without naming every storm.

There was no ceremony, no funeral, and no farewell note. But somewhere along the road, the person I spent years being simply stepped aside.

I occasionally catch glimpses of him in old photographs or notebooks. I recognize the handwriting and the tilt of the head, but the emotional logic that drove him feels like a foreign language I used to speak fluently as a child.

The change did not happen overnight in a thunderclap. It happened in the quiet compromises, the wounds that healed into thicker skin, the battles I decided were no longer worth winning.

It is an eerie sensation to realize that you are living in the afterlife of who you once were. You don't necessarily mourn him, but you honor the ground he walked to bring you here.
